Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
