The McLaren driver edged out fellow driver and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the quickest lap in the dying seconds of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The British racer, who seized the title advantage from Piastri by a single point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, beat the Australian by a mere 0.023s. Before then, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair for most of the session before sprint qualifying set to begin at 18:30 GMT. The Red Bull star, the other racer in the points battle, sitting with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, was classified in 17th place as his Red Bull team followed a different programme. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to crash, if briefly, when he rotated at the fourth corner early in the session. Tsunoda slid over the exit kerbs before spinning across the gravel trap, and was blessed to avoid just a light touch of the fence. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also lost it, at the conclusion of the session, rotating twice through the fast downhill Mergulho corner before the last turn on to the main straight. Hamilton wrapped up in 19th place, one place behind teammate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren pair were far ahead of the rest of the field, with the German's Sauber third fastest, 0.619 seconds slower than Piastri's best. The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
