Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to question particular rulings from the official, echoing the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
